About

Why Pro-RURAL Alliance?

Boulder County is special because of its long history of setting aside rural areas and open space for preservation and protection. The Pro-RURAL Alliance believes strongly in maintaining that vision for our County. Our rural areas provide us with local agricultural products, places to enjoy recreational activities, havens for wildlife, magnificent “views to die for” of the foothills and mountains, and important soul-nourishing breathing space that we all can appreciate.

With the enormous pressures of growth and development, we believe it is important to be aware of proposals and policies that could erode the features that make Boulder County a special place to live. We all know that changes are unavoidable. But with awareness and thoughtful engagement, we can work to ensure that the changes are in keeping with the vision of the Boulder County Comprehensive Plan, and that we preserve the reasons we all wanted to live here in the first place.

Our Mission

To preserve and protect rural Boulder County for current and future generations.

From Our Co-founders

Chris Ennis and Karen Mandery

Sparked by a series of issues that popped up in 2023 near us, we formed the Pro-RURAL Alliance as a group of citizens concerned about the preservation of rural areas in Boulder County. We were struck by the sheer number of people throughout the County that cared deeply about the 2023 issues, and who were concerned more generally about issues affecting our rural lands. We noted how difficult it was for people to find out about the various applications and proposals for rural areas of the County. In short, we both saw a need in our community for this group.

In early 2024 we developed our name, Pro-RURAL Alliance, and launched this website as a resource for the community. We welcome (and depend on!) your input and involvement. Contact us by email.

Our Goals

  • Promote the community’s awareness of proposals and policies that would impact rural, unincorporated, recreational, and agricultural lands in the County.

  • Foster effective community engagement in issues that would affect rural Boulder County.

  • Develop constructive and mutually beneficial working relationships with land owners, stakeholders, and County officials on ways to preserve and enhance the rural heritage of Boulder County.
